Carpeting Materials NYLON is characterised by toughness and good abrasion resistance and often has treatments applied i.e. 'StainMaster' to increase its resistance to staining and soiling. WOOL-NYLON is often blended with wool to increase abrasion resistance, especially in lighter weight carpets. The wool-nylon blend most often used is 80 percent wool with 20 percent nylon. ACRYLIC has good durability and resilience but soils easily and is more difficult to clean. Acrylic burns readily, but some modified acrylics are flame resistant. POLYPROPYLENE has good abrasion resistance but it tends to flatten quickly. The fibre can split on exposure to sunshine and is flammable. It is often used in carpet tiles and 'artificial grass' carpets. It is also sometimes used in tufted carpet backing instead of jute. Good value for money. Carpeting Ratings - as set by the Australian
